ROYAL CANIN USA Supports Animals In Need Through Meals on Wheels

A donation of ROYAL CANIN Feline and Canine Health Nutrition helps to feed the animals of homebound individuals.

St. Charles, MO – December 5 – Since 1968, the Meals on Wheels organization in Greenville, SC has been delivering nutritious meals straight to the doors of 1,550 homebound individuals in their community per month; and now, with donations from companies like ROYAL CANIN USA, Inc., they are also providing food for about 450 of their clients’ pets.

"About five years ago, our volunteers began to notice that many of the recipients were immediately putting their plates on their floor and giving a portion of their meals to their hungry pets," said Michael Combs, Facility Manager at Meals on Wheels of Greenville, "so we immediately sent out requests for donations in order to help feed these animals as well."

According to Combs, about 1,900 lbs. of pet food is distributed to the Meals on Wheels recipients’ pets each month, and in November, ROYAL CANIN USA, Inc. donated 3,225 lbs. of dry dog and cat food to the organization. "We were thrilled when we learned about the donation that Royal Canin was making," said Combs. "We even had to utilize a warehouse down the street in order to store it all."

All of the clients in the Meals on Wheels program are homebound and physically or mentally challenged to a point where meal preparation is nearly impossible, and most clients live alone or with another incapacitated person. Since getting food for themselves is a challenge, clients find getting food for their pets to be a challenge as well.

"To so many people, their pets are considered a part of the family, so it was no surprise that people would put their own hunger aside to feed their pets," said Ann Hudson, Director of Marketing at ROYAL CANIN USA, Inc. "We are just delighted that we can help such a wonderful organization feed both people and pets."
